Walt Disney World on Points: Our Last Minute Fall Break Trip

A last minute trip that came together beautifully

Some of the best Disney trips are the ones you almost talk yourself out of. This fall break, three women and four kids (boys 11 and 8, girls 10 and 7) pulled together a Walt Disney World getaway on short notice, and it turned into one of our favorite trips yet.

My crew was me, my two boys, and a dear friend who came along with us. We arrived October 9 and stayed through October 13. Our friends, a mom and her two daughters, came in a day early on October 8. They kept the magic going while they waited for us with a character breakfast at Cape May Cafe and a lazy afternoon at the pool.

Here is exactly how it went.

Our stay at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek

The Signia is a Disney Good Neighbor hotel just outside Disney property, and it felt like a true resort. Our two queen, pool view room was spacious and comfortable, with real breathing room for a family after long park days.

The pool was the star. It was a huge hit with the kids, and it became our afternoon ritual. Leaving the parks around 4 or 5 to swim, then heading back out refreshed, made every day feel easier.

We did not dine at the hotel, but the coffee spot became my daily stop and we enjoyed the hotel bar one evening. Guests also have access to a spa and golf course, which is a lovely perk if someone in your group wants a break from the Disney bubble.

The shuttle: free, but plan around it

The complimentary shuttle is convenient, but it is not Disney transportation. Here is what we noticed:

  • Long gaps between pickups

  • Multiple stops before reaching your park

  • Magic Kingdom drop off at the Transportation and Ticket Center, not the front gate, so you still need the monorail or ferry

On our first morning, a late shuttle put us further back in the entry line than I wanted. After that, we used Uber for rope drop mornings and it was worth every penny.

Parking at the hotel costs extra, and valet is available. We brought two cars, which gave us flexibility for pool breaks and dinners.

Three park days, every headliner

We had three park days with Park Hopper tickets, during a busy fall break week. We still rode everything on our list, including every headliner, mostly by rope dropping.

Day 1: Animal Kingdom and EPCOT

The shuttle ran late, and we got into Animal Kingdom about 15 minutes after Early Theme Park Entry began. We headed straight to Expedition Everest and rode it twice.

We hopped to EPCOT around 10:30am. The single rider line for Remy's Ratatouille Adventure took just 15 minutes while the posted standby wait was 60. Lunch was a 12:45pm reservation at Tutto Italia, a relaxed sit down meal that recharged everyone. We stayed until about 5pm, then went back for an evening at the pool.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom and EPCOT

We took an Uber to Magic Kingdom and rope dropped Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Next was TRON Lightcycle / Run with only a 30 minute wait.

We left around 4pm and hopped to EPCOT for the International Food & Wine Festival, sampling a few of the food and wine pairings. We closed the park with Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, joining the line at 8pm for an 85 minute wait, which was the lowest we’d seen all day. Riding after close was the perfect end to the night.

Day 3: Hollywood Studios and 'Ohana

Another Uber got us to Hollywood Studios early. We rope dropped Slinky Dog Dash before Early Entry officially began, then went to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance with a 25 minute wait and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run with a 15 minute wait. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster was our longest wait of the day at 50 minutes.

We had a reservation at Oga's Cantina, rode a few more favorites, and grabbed lunch at Baseline Tap House. Our Lightning Lane for Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway around 2pm was the last ride before we headed back for one more pool afternoon.

Our final dinner was at 'Ohana at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. We could hear the music from Happily Ever After during dinner and watched the Electrical Water Pageant float by from the window. It was the sweetest way to say goodbye.

The honest truth about Lightning Lanes during fall break

Staying off property meant we could book Lightning Lane Multi Pass only 3 days ahead, compared to 7 days for Disney resort guests. During a crowded fall break week, that made a real difference.

  • Single Pass was sold out by the time our booking window opened, so we used Multi Pass only.

  • Choices were limited. The earliest return times we could book in advance were around 10:30 or 11.

  • Refills came late. After tapping into our first ride, the next available times were usually 5 to 7 pm.

  • Magic Kingdom was the best Lightning Lane day simply because it has so many attractions to choose from.

The takeaway: Lightning Lanes were a nice extra, but rope drop is what made this trip work.

What I would tell any family planning a short Disney trip

  1. Rope drop is your best value. It is the most cost effective way to ride headliners with short waits, no extra purchase required.

  2. Stay late for headliners. Waits often drop as the park gets close to closing.

  3. Consider a Good Neighbor hotel. You can save money, get a more spacious room, or earn and use loyalty points. Ours saved us about $1,800.

  4. Short trips can still be full trips. Three park days was plenty to do everything on our list, and it is even easier in lower crowd seasons.

  5. Not everyone has to love Disney. A resort with a great pool, spa, and golf gives friends or family members who want a break from the Disney bubble something wonderful of their own.
